There are a lot of things they don’t tell you in school. Like when you wake up and the curtains are grey and the walls are closing in. And your eyes slowly open and it’s cold everywhere and it feels ok for a moment, and then you remember everything and the curtains bleed at the edges and you start falling again. They don’t tell you that in order to get out of bed you have to not only have legs but also the will. They don’t tell you that life costs your breath and your mattress and your pills and that most of us are too fucking poor to afford it. Dirt poor. Black bus stop poor. We found her in the bed
Her blankets like a nest
Blue eyes boiling over
Listening to silence
Scratches on her legs
We found her in the bathtub
Her hair burnt by the toaster
Stale bread was eaten
By the foul pigeons she had
Hid
We found her in the soil
Grimy black her only friend
Heavy with the ghosts
that helped her fall

We found her in the flowers
Grey sweaters cloaked on petals
Lifted by our memory
Drifting on a violet breeze

And they rise and they fall
But never leave us because we are always awake
So we speed
Nowhere
Because we have broken time
Rewinding moments in order to forget
Casting away the wolves that are always hunting us
Spinning them into darkness
On the side of the highway
And we know they’ll return
Paws beating frozen ground
Slinking back into our shadows
But still
We speed
Gripping th
Sleepy eyed girl
Two hollows in her face
Sunken,
Ocean deep
She is a grey cloud
Taking others worries
Turning them white
While she sinks lower
Sleepy eyed girl
With her worn flannel sleeves,
That hang over her wrists
Hiding her sorrow
Bowing and receding
Into blankets of winter
Sleepy eyed girl
Nesting deeper into hills
Losing herself faster
With each breath
Slipping
The secret is,
She is always sleeping
